Funnels

A funnel measures how visitors progress through an ordered sequence of recorded pageviews and custom events.

Create a funnel

1. Open Funnels → Create funnel.
2. Enter a name and choose Continue.
3. Choose Add step, then Pageview or Event.
4. Select a suggested value or type the exact page path or event name. Choose Use page path or Use event name to add a value not listed.
5. Add the next steps in order, then choose Create. At least two steps are required.

Back returns to the previous screen without discarding the draft. Remove a step with its remove button. Cancel, the close button or Escape dismisses an unsaved draft. Only the final Create saves a funnel; a failed save leaves your entries available to correct or retry. Up to twelve steps and fifty funnels per website are supported.

Suggestions reuse the selected period’s Overview: up to twelve reported page paths or custom event names. Search filters those suggestions; exact manual entry also works for values outside the list or not yet tracked. A suggestion-load error does not prevent manual entry, and a failed save shows the server’s reason, including the seconds to wait when the request was rate-limited. Page steps match exact recorded paths and event steps match exact names.

Start from an event

Select an event on the Overview Events card, then choose Create funnel beside the active filters. The date range carries over. A Funnels URL with ?event=signup opens the Add steps screen with signup as the first event and signup funnel as its draft name. Add at least one more step before creating it. Use Back to change the name; remove and re-add steps to change their order.

Names longer than 300 characters or containing only whitespace do not open a prefilled draft. Closing or successfully creating the draft removes the URL’s event parameter. Opening a draft creates no tracking rule or saved definition.

Read the result

Choose a funnel from the toolbar dropdown and set a date range. Funnel and step-type menus support keyboard selection and follow your theme. The diagram and step table show reached steps, conversions and drop-off; on narrow screens the step columns scroll sideways inside their card, with a fade on the right edge while more steps remain. Steps advance in time order for the reported visitor; a sequence can span sessions within the selected data.

Rolling periods use five-minute refresh intervals while this tab is visible. Temporary step-processing records are removed after the result is saved; this does not change the saved funnel definition or source events.

Compare periods

Select a preceding period, fixed-day shift or custom comparison beside the date control. Seean analyzes the same selected funnel definition in both intervals. The heading shows comparison completions and total conversion; each step shows its comparison visitor count and total conversion. The diagram and breakdown table remain current-period views. The comparison button shows its dates; changing the comparison clears stale comparison values while the next result loads. See date ranges and comparisons for timezone and interval rules.

Edit or duplicate a funnel

Edit beside the step breakdown opens the selected funnel in the builder with its name and steps prefilled on the Add steps screen. Change the steps, use Back to rename, then choose Save. The same rules as creation apply: two to twelve steps, and only the final Save changes the definition. Editing keeps the funnel’s link and replaces its analysis: results already computed for the previous steps are kept as they were, and the changed funnel starts a new analysis. A result computed less than five minutes earlier for the same period can be reused once before a fresh one is produced.

Duplicate creates a copy with the same steps named after the original plus “copy”, then selects it. Copies count toward the fifty-funnel limit, so the action fails at the limit; editing still works. Use a duplicate to test a variation without changing the original.

Change the question

A funnel analyzes activity already collected; creating it does not install new tracking. Instrument missing custom events before expecting those steps to fill. Edit the funnel to change its steps, or duplicate it to compare a variation. Deleting a funnel removes its saved definition, not the website’s event history.
