Time windows
Online counts distinct daily visitors with a recent pageview, custom event or presence signal. The browser tracker sends a presence signal every 30 seconds while its page is visible, even when the visitor stays on the same page without clicking or generating an event. Returning to a visible tab resumes signals. Several tabs with the same daily identity count as one visitor.
The online window is two minutes before the analysis time. The dashboard refreshes each minute and rounds that time down to the minute; a closed, hidden, sleeping or disconnected page can therefore remain listed for roughly two to three minutes after its last signal. This is recent browser presence, not an instantaneous connection count. Collection blockers, exclusions and privacy preferences still apply.
Presence does not add pageviews, custom events, conversions or billable usage, and does not extend analytics sessions. Visitors, Views and Events still use actual events from the last 30 minutes. Someone reading the same page longer than 30 minutes can therefore be Online without appearing in the 30-minute Visitors total. Times in globe popups and the computed-period line use your display time zone.
Older copies of the tracker and server integrations without presence signals continue to count through recent events. An already open page must reload to receive an updated tracker; a deployment cannot update JavaScript already running in a visitor’s tab.
Globe and controls
One marker per place marks where online visitors are: the network edge reports the visitor’s approximate position (rounded to about 10 km), and visitors without one sit at their country’s centre. A larger dot means more visitors there. Hover a marker for the place with its flag, the visitor count, and the latest visitor’s page, device, referrer and last-seen time. The globe turns slowly on its own until you drag it; drag to rotate, use the mouse wheel or the zoom buttons to zoom, reset to return to the starting view, or open it fullscreen. The star field behind the globe moves with the camera. Visitors without a known country are counted online but draw no marker.
The globe follows your display theme: dark mode uses blue-grey shading to match the dashboard, with brighter blue visitor markers; light mode uses a pale globe with darker blue markers. Switching themes updates the globe without resetting its view.
Activity and breakdowns
The Activity card has four tabs. All, Views and Events read the selected activity from the last 30 minutes, newest first, in pages of 40. Filtering happens before pagination, so recent pageviews do not hide older custom events. Choose Load more for earlier matching rows. Once you do, All, Views and Events keep their 30-minute window so the minute refresh does not discard the loaded pages. Refresh activity appears when a newer window is available; switching tabs also refreshes it. Visitors pages through every visitor in the current online snapshot once each, with country, current page and last-seen time, using the same two-minute window as the count. A minute refresh restarts the list for the new window.
The globe displays at most the latest 200 online visitors; the subtitle states this map-only limit when it applies. Missing country/location data can reduce displayed markers further. The Online count and paged Visitors list still include every matching visitor. Country, page and referrer cards show their top ten rows for the last 30 minutes. Each activity tab has its own loading and empty state. A snapshot of up to 200 visitors reuses the bounded Realtime result. Larger lists are read directly from ClickHouse, merged with short-lived presence state and paged in stable visitor-key order so heartbeats do not duplicate a visitor between pages. No separate analysis-detail records are created.
No recent traffic
Open a tracked page and wait for incoming data. Check Settings → Installation → Setup health and follow troubleshooting if no pageviews arrive. A visitor can be absent because collection is blocked, excluded or paused.
